As the Center for Independent Living celebrates 50 Years of Impact, we’re inviting you to take a journey with us, decade by decade, through the milestones, people, and programs that have shaped our mission and advanced disability rights in Central Florida.
Over the next several months, we’ll share the stories that built our foundation, the victories that defined our path, and the moments that inspired lasting change. From grassroots beginnings to major legislative triumphs, each decade tells a unique chapter in our ongoing pursuit of accessibility, equity, and empowerment for all.
Our history is a testament to what’s possible when a community stands together. Every ramp built, policy advocated, and program launched has been fueled by people who believed in a future without limits.

We begin our journey in the 1980s, a decade that solidified our role as a leader in disability rights. This was the era of:
