From Barriers to Freedom: How One Ramp Changed Noel and Daisy’s Life

For many families, accessibility challenges aren’t just inconveniences, they’re daily barriers to safety, health, and peace of mind. For Daisy and Noel, those barriers felt overwhelming.

Without a ramp at their home, something as simple as taking Noel to a doctor’s appointment became nearly impossible. The steep steps and a large tree blocking Daisy’s path made every outing feel like a nightmare. “I didn’t know how I was going to manage it,” she shared.

When Daisy connected with the Center for Independent Living in Central Florida, everything began to change. Case Manager Shandra immediately stepped in, helping with the tree that blocked their way. Within days, volunteers offered to clear the branches free of charge and soon after, a safe, sturdy ramp was built to provide the access they desperately needed.

Maria, another member of the CIL team, came with a technician to ensure they had the tools and support necessary to feel confident again.

“They were wonderful,” Daisy said. “Before, it was like a nightmare… but now it’s easier, and I feel more relaxed.”

What might seem like a simple ramp made all the difference. Daisy no longer fears how to safely take Noel out of the house. Instead, they have regained peace of mind, comfort, and independence.

Their story is just one example of the life-changing impact of CIL’s Community Inclusion program, connecting families to resources, and creating spaces where everyone belongs.

Daisy now encourages others to reach out for help:
“Please call the Center and talk to them. Tell them what you’re going through, and they will be able to help you the way they helped me.”

Stories like Noel and Daisy’s remind us why accessibility matters and why community support is essential. Every ramp built, every barrier removed, and every life touched is made possible through the generosity of donors, volunteers, and partners.
