Opening Doors to Independence: Abigail’s Story

At just seven years old, Abigail is already a fighter. Bright-eyed and determined, she navigates her world with courage and curiosity, even as that world requires daily medical care, mobility support, and the unwavering advocacy of those around her.

Abigail’s journey recently took a life-changing turn, thanks to the efforts of her case manager and the dedicated team at the Center for Independent Living (CIL) in Central Florida.

For Abigail and her family, something as simple as leaving the house used to be an exhausting ordeal. Their home lacked an accessible entrance, making every trip outside an uphill battle. Her parents had no choice but to carry Abigail down the steps while separately managing her wheelchair, juggling safety, physical strain, and the emotional weight of knowing their daughter’s needs weren’t being fully met.

“Taking Abigail out of the house was almost impossible,” her parent shared. “It was overwhelming. We just wanted her to be able to experience the world like any other child.”

When Abigail’s case manager realized the family needed more than medical support, something broader, deeper, and more lasting, she referred them to the Center for Independent Living.

CIL stepped in not just as a service provider, but as a partner in possibility.

Through our Community Inclusion and Foundations to Freedom programs, Abigail’s family received the support they needed to make their home safer and more accessible. Most notably, a new wheelchair ramp now graces the front of their house, seemingly simple in design but profound in its impact. For the first time, Abigail can enter and exit her home with the dignity and ease every child deserves.

The support didn’t stop there. CIL’s team connected Abigail’s family with additional agencies and services, including the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD). These referrals helped them access further care coordination, assistive technology, and long-term planning tools to ensure Abigail can thrive at home, in school, and in her community.

With these supports in place, Abigail’s parents have found a renewed sense of stability, confidence, and hope.

“CIL has been a true blessing,” they said. “They saw us, they heard us, and they helped lift a weight we didn’t know we could set down.”

At the Center for Independent Living, we believe that independence is not just a goal, it’s a right. We work every day to remove barriers, empower families, and ensure that children like Abigail have access to a world that is built to include them.

Whether it’s through home modifications, advocacy, transition planning, or referral services, our work is centered on one thing: people. People who deserve to live full, vibrant lives in their homes and communities without limits.

Abigail’s story is just one of many. There are countless families across Central Florida who are still waiting for that same opportunity to feel seen, supported, and empowered.

When you support CIL, you help provide critical resources, create safe homes, and build more accessible futures. Together, we can turn obstacles into opportunities and ensure that no one is left behind.
